The History of Water Fluoridation

Fluoride was first added to US municipal water supplies in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945 โ€” a programme promoted by the US Public Health Service and largely financed by ALCOA (Aluminium Company of America), which produced sodium fluorosilicic acid (hydrofluorosilicic acid) as an industrial manufacturing byproduct. ALCOA faced regulatory pressure over fluoride waste disposal; water fluoridation converted a waste disposal problem into a revenue stream. The dentist who proposed the programme โ€” Frederick McKay โ€” documented that fluoride reduced tooth decay (while also causing dental fluorosis โ€” mottling of tooth enamel) in naturally fluoridated water regions.

The industrial fluoride added to water supplies is not pharmaceutical-grade calcium fluoride โ€” it is hydrofluorosilicic acid, a byproduct of phosphate fertiliser manufacturing that also contains trace quantities of arsenic, lead, and mercury. The distinction between naturally occurring fluoride (calcium fluoride) and the industrial fluoride compound actually added to water is rarely discussed in public health communications.

The Pineal Gland Calcification

The pineal gland โ€” a small endocrine gland in the brain that produces melatonin and regulates circadian rhythms โ€” accumulates fluoride at higher concentrations than any other tissue in the body. Dr. Jennifer Luke's research (University of Surrey, published 1997-2001) documented that the human pineal gland contains the highest concentration of fluoride of any organ, and that fluoride exposure correlates with pineal calcification. Pineal calcification has been associated with: disrupted melatonin production, sleep disorders, early puberty (the pineal gland inhibits sexual maturation), and in esoteric traditions, with the suppression of the "third eye" โ€” the intuitive, spiritually perceptive faculty.

The 2024 Federal Court Ruling

In September 2024, a US federal judge ruled in Food & Water Watch v. EPA that the EPA must regulate fluoride in drinking water. The ruling relied on expert testimony that fluoride causes measurable IQ reductions in children at levels present in US drinking water โ€” confirmed by a 2020 meta-analysis of 72 studies and a 2023 National Toxicology Program (NTP) report (which the DHHS initially suppressed then released under FOIA pressure) concluding with "moderate confidence" that fluoride is a neurotoxin causing IQ reduction in children. This is not a fringe claim: it is the conclusion of the US government's own National Toxicology Program.

Global Context โ€” Most Nations Rejected It

Of European nations, only the Republic of Ireland and Spain continue water fluoridation. Germany, France, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Norway โ€” all reviewed and rejected water fluoridation based on efficacy and safety concerns. The US and Australia are the primary holdouts. The international scientific consensus has moved away from water fluoridation; the US CDC still endorses it. The financial relationship between phosphate fertiliser producers (who benefit from fluoride waste disposal as water additive) and US regulatory bodies warrants scrutiny.
